These 3 Organizing Tips Can Actually Cause More Harm Than Good

by | Aug 2, 2022

When it’s time to pack and move, it’s tempting to go all out and try every organizing tip you can find. But beware — not all advice is created equal. In fact, some of the most popular tips can actually do more harm than good. Here are three to watch out for:

1. Buying Storage Organizers Without a Plan

Organizers are great, but only if you have a plan for what exactly goes in them. Otherwise, they can quickly become overloaded and crammed full of things, which defeats the purpose. Or worse, they may just lie there, unused, and add to the chaos. So, before buying any storage organizers, take an inventory of what you need to store and come up with the right size and capacity for each one.

2. Decanting Everything into a Container

When you’re trying to get organized, it can be tempting to just throw everything into a box or bin and call it a day. But unless you take the time to sort through your things first, you’ll just end up with an unorganized mess in a new location.

So before decanting anything, go through each item and decide whether you need it or not. Toss, sell, or donate what you don’t need, and only then should you start transferring your remaining things into storage containers.

3. Color Coding Everything

Color coding is not always practical, and it can sometimes make things more difficult to find. You’re better off organizing your items by category than by color.

For example, if you’re trying to organize your closet, it would make more sense to group all your shirts together, all your pants together, and so on. That way, you can easily see what you have and grab what you need without having to search through a bunch of different colors.

Bonus Point: Not Labeling Everything to Keep Things Prettier

It’s tedious and aesthetically risky to label all your containers, but the process is necessary to maintain an organized system. If you absolutely hate labeling (and the potential for mess-ups), try to keep things simple by using clear containers. This way, you can easily see what’s inside without having to label each one.
